The product is a starter-sized plant with an approximate 4-inch-diameter root zone. The plant will be a minimum of 6 to 8 inches tall. It will not have buds or blooms on arrival. Starter-sized plants are intended for a gardener to plant and grow to their mature size.

  • Codiaeum variegatum Tamara is a unique and interesting cultivar of the old Eburneum variety. While it has the same unique, limited green and creamy white variegation pattern in the leaves, it is a somewhat smaller, slower, and more compact version. However, it is important to note that smaller is a relative term, as the Eburneum is a massive, almost tree-like shrub maturing above 8 feet. Tamara has a shorter mature height of 5 to 6 feet.
  • Croton plants produce flowers that appear in random clusters of tan to beige tufts. They add interesting texture but are not otherwise remarkable. This species is primarily grown for its highly variegated, intensely colored leaves, and can be used in many interesting and versatile ways within a tropical to semi-tropical landscape.
  • Care: Plant in fertile, well-draining, acidic soil or potting media. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture, while taking care not to overwater. Feed a good quality general-purpose slow-release fertilizer with the initial planting and annually in the Spring thereafter. Prune in early Spring for the best color saturation and distribution in the Fall. Monitor for common plant problems and treat as necessary.
  • Indoor Growing: Crotons can be successfully grown indoors with a few modifications. They require the full spectrum of bright, indirect light for 4 to 6 hours daily to maintain color, consistently warm temperatures of 70*F or above, and high ambient humidity in the 50%-80% range.
  • Climate: Crotons are tropical plants. They are recommended for USDA Growing Zones 9, 10, 11, but require cold protection in all Zones for the best appearance and longest life.
